All hail the wind Turbines
Monday, 06 November 2006
Ok, I know many people don't like them but I think a couple of 'fairly esthetically pleasing' wind turbines are better than burning coal, nuclear power, ozone depletion and global warming. So lets spare a thought for dear mother nature and give the turbines a try!

1/8. Solar panels

Wonder if it would look better if the hills were covered in Solar Panels?

I completely agree, what is worse polluting our landscape with wind turbines or an inevitable future of no landscape at all. Plus I think they don't look so bad especially if you realise what they are protecting!

3/8. Now we lose our landscapes !!

As someone who regularly gets out into the local hills to enjoy the wonderful countryside we have, I see them, together with the pylons also required, as a blight on our countryside and one which will not help attract future tousists. Tourism is one of the few 'industries' we have left in Scotland !! Let's not sit back and watch that vanish for a few Kws of very expensive electricity.

4/8. I kinda agree

.. and that is because if there is not going to be enough thought into where they go and if they get neglected and fall into disrepair they sure will become an eyesore!

5/8. Well I disagree,

Well disagree, Tourism is important and yes it looks bad n the countryside, we the public need to make sure that they dont go into disrepair and are restricted to certain areas. However we need to think of our childrens future and hope that we will have tourism and life in 10years time and not have a planet at all so lets think of the long term and not the short term because it is awful selfish!!

6/8. Nuclear power etc

Plus I would rather see a couple of windmills dotted around than nuclear power stations that ruin tourism as wel!!Soon there will be so many restricted areas for the nucear waste and we all know how long that takes to decontaminate!!

Are people not aware that wind turbines do not replace conventional power generation. As wind is very unpredictable the power companies have to keep coal or oil plants running at all times anyway to guarantee supply. They run the coal plants more inefficiently so CO2 emissions are not reduced.

8/8. Public need to be better informed

No conventional power plants have been closed in the UK or replaced by wind farms. You can't store the power generated. You can't predict when power will be generated. Wind farms are industrial developments which generate money through ROC subsidies which can be sold for more than any electricity which might be generated. Put them in industrial areas or off shore but don't waste our best tourism assets or historic landscapes for no real or significant reduction in CO2 emissions.
